Premier League Team of the Season 14/15

As a surprisingly dull Premier League season draws to a slow conclusion I have decided to embrace the trend and to create my own team of the season. I’ve decided to opt for a 4-3-3 formation, for no other reason than the fact that I only play with this formation on FIFA.

Man Utd v Everton

GK – David De Gea.

Arguably the most obvious pick on the whole team, the Spaniard has been incredible, saving Manchester United’s blushes far too many times this season.

clyne

RB – Nathaniel Clyne

Clyne has really stepped up this season after a good showing last year. His great form has prompted a call up for the national side, which surely must be his to lose given his competition being the infuriating combo of Glen Johnson and Kyle Walker.

JT

CB – John Terry

The standout defensive player in the Premier League this season. In my opinion he was unlucky to have not been named PFA Player of the Season ahead of Eden Hazard. Under Mourinho he’s rolled back the years and led Chelsea’s title charge from the back.

Arsenal v Southampton - Premier League

CB – Laurent Koscielny

This was a straight shoot-out between Koscielny and Jose Fonte, but despite his dreadful performance at home to Monaco it was Koscielny that got the nod, due to his impressive ability to bring the ball out from the back.

azpi

LB – Cesar Azpilicueta

The best full back in the league and the only real choice in this position, even if the PFA chose Ryan Bertrand. Azpilicueta, or Dave as his team-mates call him, has kept Chelsea’s expensive Filipe Luis out of the starting eleven despite having originally been signed as a right back.

Nemanja_Matic

CM – Nemanja Matic

A rock in the Chelsea midfield who does the unfashionable work of breaking up play and distributing the ball to Chelsea’s creative talents.

fabregas

CM – Cesc Fabregas

At the risk of this team becoming Chelsea and friends, I had to include Fabregas in this team. He’s tailed off since Christmas as he does every season, however he has still been good even if not reaching the standards of his incredible start. Bonus points for winding up Arsenal fans to such an incredible degree.

Literal and metaphorical passing of the armband

CM – Jordan Henderson

Whilst his team haven’t reached the heights of last season, Henderson keeps impressing for both club and country. Pre-World Cup pundits were still applauding Steven Gerrard as a regista, comparing him with Andrea Pirlo. One awful World Cup and a poor league campaign later and it’s become clear where the real drive in Liverpool’s team comes from.

sanchez

RW – Alexis Sanchez

Sanchez has lit up the Emirates since his transfer from Barcelona, his pace combined with his directness has added a lethal edge to the Arsenal attack, something which they’ve been lacking in recent years.

Harry Kane

STR – Harry Kane

It was close between him and Sergio Aguero, and indeed Diego Costa had he suffered less of a drop through Spring. Harry Kane wins a spot though. Twenty league goals for a patchy Spurs side is a fantastic haul and, albeit with too much media hype, he has seemingly refreshed faith in the national side.

hazard

LW – Eden Hazard

The PFA Player of the Season occupies the left flank in my side due to not playing with a number ten. He’s improved steadily throughout his Chelsea career, but this has been his best season yet. One of the most impressive aspects of his game is his willingness to engage in defensive duties, something which a number of players of his talent would not entertain.

koeman

Manager – Ronald Koeman

We’re all bored of media spouting the may positives of Koeman’s regime at Southampton but it really is impressive how he managed to improve a side that lost a huge amount of talent over the summer. It will be interesting to see if he suffers from the fabled second season syndrome.

bench

Subs –

Hugo Lloris – Another impressive season for the Frenchman, far from the Neuer-lite he is sometimes painted to be.

Jose Fonte – Tremendous at the heart of defence for Southampton. He’s been the lynchpin that one of the leagues finest defences has been built around.

Martin Skrtel – Besides one moment of madness against Man United he’s been the one capable defender in an awful Liverpool backline.

Morgan Schneiderlin – Has been superb for the Saints this season and shown both his ability at breaking up play but also the wide variety of passing at his disposal.

Michael Carrick – The Man United man divides opinion but he’s become a player that Van Gaal relies upon. He doesn’t score enough, or get enough assists or rack up enough tackles to silence his doubters however his sheer presence seems to have a profound influence upon the team.

Sergio Aguero – The sole shining light in a disappointing season for the aging Man City team. He’s one of the Premier League’s few elite remaining players and continues to push his side forward.

Charlie Austin – The former bricklayer is an interesting player, unlucky to be born into an era when a striker is expected to do more than just score. Whilst his play isn’t as expansive as a number of the players surrounding him in the goal scoring charts he continues to notch crucial goals for strugglers QPR. Surely he will be given an international cap soon.
